On Thursday 2nd of August, as for the past 19 years, the Stëmm vun der Strooss organized its traditional summer trip. From 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the Amneville Zoo served as a recreational and discovery framework for 90 people, including many children and persons with reduced mobility. It was on board of the three buses booked for the event by the Stëmm, that participants, with their lunch package including food and beverages, took the road under the guidance of 7 social workers led by Director Alexandra Oxacelay. At the same time, a group of 60 disadvantaged people went to Esch-sur-Alzette to visit the Han caves.
The journey took place in a good atmosphere. The conversations went well. It must be said that this was the first visit of a zoo for the majority of people present. Around 10:05 am, the bus parked and everyone walked towards the entrance at a ten minutes’ walk, where the group photo immortalized the event. The director of Stëmm announced the agenda of the day and each one received a printed plan to guide himself and be able to find the place of appointment agreed for the return to Luxembourg at the end of the day.
It was a beautiful day, the sun was burning. The groups formed by affinity and then began to discover the wonders of the 17ha of this zoological garden. Each of them followed his dream of immersing himself in the world of the cats, passing through the birds of prey or gorillas, reptiles, vivarium turtles, parrots and wolves. The trails were wide and easy to access. What about the reactions of the smaller ones when they crossed the eyes of an eagle or an owl? A show in particular has caught their attention. It is the one of Remy Flachaire with his eight tigers all more imposing than others. It is at the rhythm of the walks and picnic areas that everyone arrived to share the meal planned and exchange with wonder about what had already been admired.
The visit continued its course and marked a final stop at 15:00 pm when everyone found themselves at the Sarawak restaurant to share a drink or ice cream. It was the privileged moment to receive everybody feedbacks. Amina, who made the trip with four children, was delighted. She was amazed at the elephant grooming. Her favorite moment is the one with the tigers, even though she confessed having preferred the highest places in order not to be too close to the cats. As she said, “you never know”.
Benoit had a good time but regretted not being able to see everything. He is a regular of the Stëmm and considers these trips as a vacation in the face of the hardness of everyday life in the street: “Besides having a pleasant time, the zoo allows us to learn more about animals from the five continents that share this space. And you need several visits to get to the end of this giant zoo”. At 16:00 pm, everyone reached the point of reunion and took place in the bus for the return.
The souvenir pictures and trinkets can be found in the bags of the luckiest. The others leaved with their eyes full of stars, having lived a wonderful moment away from the difficult conditions of their everyday life. After a 15-minutes journey, the conversations are shredded and everyone could sleep peacefully after tasting the croissants and bottles of water offered by the Stëmm. A new day in the life of the association and those of the participants at this annual trip was written in joyful letters in the memories. We cannot wait for next year!
